#WorkinginCSA: Championing Cybersecurity with ‘Stop and Check’ Campaign

Jingxuan Chen is a Senior Assistant Director in CSA’s Communications and Engagement Division. She is part of the media, campaigns and partnerships team managing the sixth National Cybersecurity Campaign – ‘Stop and Check’.

About my Role
As a communications professional, my role involves raising awareness of CSA's initiatives and helping people appreciate our initiatives and products, which can often be quite technical. I strive to present CSA's projects in a way that's both engaging and credible, ensuring our messaging resonates with audiences while upholding professional standards. From Jaga-ing campaigns to Jaga-ing CSA's media relations, I'm passionate that cybersecurity should be relatable to everyone, from children and students to working adults and seniors.

Apart from campaigns, I work on crisis communications and media relations. Shaping the narrative within days, even hours, to convey key messages for coverage in key media outlets is challenging but very fulfilling, especially given that reporters are faced with a mirage of newsworthy content everyday. My favourite line to myself is that media publications are not my grandfather’s newsletter, so I must engage them thoughtfully and sincerely.

2. What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

Nine years ago, cybersecurity was considered a sunrise industry and a new, exciting field given the drive towards digitalisation. I took it up and never regretted my decision.

3. What are some projects you’ve worked on that you found particularly interesting?

We just launched our campaign with a new national mascot, Jaga the Cybersecurity Hedgehog, and this is the project I’m most excited about right now. You can see Jaga in action from the photographs, and I hope readers find him cute!

The campaign reminds us to take a cognitive break – to pause and check if unsolicited messages or requests are real, before responding. We often act too quickly when triggered by panic and fear, which is exactly what scammers are counting on. By simply pausing to stop and check with official sources or trusted family and friends, we can better protect ourselves from losing our money and data to cybercriminals.

4. Tell us something about your job that not many people know about.

I never thought I would stay nine years in a job, and I am still aspiring towards more fruitful years here! It’s a privilege to be part of the agency from its formative years.

Many people think cybersecurity is too technical, but given that we rely on technology in our daily lives., we need to take personal responsibility for our cyber hygiene.

5. Outside of work, do you have any hobbies and interests? How do you unwind from work?

I love my Netflix and annoying my little girl and loved ones! I also enjoy playing with animals!
